The municipality of Quilombo (10,201 inhabitants in 2014; 27,928 ha) is
located 580 km west of Florianópolis.
Quilombo was once inhabited by
people led by a prophet who had predicted thay would be the only survivors to
the end of the world. A Brazilian soldier who met them in the forest, close to
river Chapecó, described them as "survivors of the Palmares Quilombo", referring
to the community established by escaped slaves in north-eastern Brazil in the
17th century.
The modern colonization of Quilombo was achieved by descendants
of German, Italian and Polish immigrants coming from Rio Grande do Sul.

The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Arcinoé Antônio Peixoto de
 Faria.
The classical Flemish-Iberian shield means that the place was under
the Iberian (Portuguese and Spanish) rule of the colonizing people who built
the nation. The mural crown with four towers classifies the town as of third
rank, or municipal seat. Red represents the qualities of the pioneers, of the
citizens and of the leaders of the community.
Argent is a symbol of peace,
friendship, work, prosperity, purity and religious feeling.
The broken
chains in chief recall escaped slaves who formed quilombos; the town is the
only one in Brazil to have been named as a tribute to those courageous people
[but see above], which contributed to the building of the nation by their
 painful labor.
Black represents the black race reduced to slavery and is a
symbol of authority, honesty, prudence, knowledge, moderation, and firmness.
The shield's lower part features the hilly topography of the municipality. In
base, the fountain pouring water represents the mineral sources present in the
municipality and gushing forth on Hélio Antônio Faresin square.
Or is a
symbol of glory, splendor, greatness, wealth, sovereignty; the white stripe
represents river Chapecó. As supporter, the bean plant represents the town as
the main bean producer in West Santa Catarina. The red scroll is inscribed in
letters argent "QUILOMBO" surrounded by the date of inauguration of the
 municipality, "29/12/1961".
