The flag and arms of São Bento do Sul are prescribed by Municipal Law No.
 174 promulgated on 27 August 1969.
Article 2.
The coat of arms shall
 be as follows.
Samnite shield surmounted by an eight-towered mural crown
 argent.
On a field argent, the symbol of the Order of St. Benedict, composed
of a circle gules surrounding a cross flory of the same on a field argent.
In chief, four Brazilian pines vert, two greater and two smaller in canton.
Grafted in base vert a lyre argent.
The shield supported dexter and sinister
by smoking chimneys charged with cogwheels argent, standing on a scroll gules
inscribed in letters argent the toponym "São Bento do Sul" surrounded by years
 "1873" and "1883".
The Samnite shield evokes the colonizing Latin race
and main builder of the Brazilian nation.
Above the shield, an eight-towered
mural crown argent classifies a town of second rank, that is, seat of a county.
The emblem of the Order of St. Benedict (Latin letters omitted) placed in the
center and the Brazilian pines in canton make the arms canting, the first
recalling the patron saint's name and the second being the trees characteristic
of the southern region of Brazil.
Argent (white) is a symbol of peace, work,
 prosperity, friendship and purity.
Gules (red) is a symbol of audacity,
intrepidity, courage, valiance, dedication and love.
Vert (green) expresses
civility, abundance, triumph, courtesy, honor and glee.
The grafted base
identifies the mountainous region where the town is located, the origin of the
nickname of "Santa Catarina Petrópolis" for its wonderful mountain climate. The
lyre emphasizes citizens' dedication and love for music, São Benito do Sul
 being known as Music City.
The supporters represent industry, the
 municipality's main source of income.
The scroll is inscribed with the
town's name and its respective years of foundation and political emancipation.

Article 2.
The flag shall be quartered in cross, the four green quarters
being constituted by four white stripes superimposed with red stripes, arranged
two by two in the horizontal and vertical dimensions, starting from the angles
of a white lozenge charged with the municipal coat of arms.
The quartering
of the flag emphasizes the people's Christian spirit.
The coat of arms
represents the municipal government, while the white lozenge inscribing it
symbolizes the proper town as the seat of the municipality.
From the
lozenge's angles start white stripes superimposed with red stripes, which
symbolize the spread of the municipal powers to all the quarters of the
 territory.
The green quarters represent the rural estates present in the
 municipality.
