Rudolfstadt Coat of Arms

Shield Vert, a sinister facing crowned lion rampant double queued Or.
Meaning:
Around 800 the area belonged to the Hersfeld Abbey. Since 1200 the Counts of Orlamünde settled down here and gained control. There existed two castle, the lower one was first mentioned in 1306. The castles were pawned to the Counts of Schwarzburg, who acquired both in 1340. Since 1571 Rudolfstadt had been the ancestral seat of the counts. Since 1599 Rudolfstadt was capital of the County of Schwarzburg and since 1697 of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolfstadt. The arms remained basically the same over the centuries but changed various times in details, as direction of the lion, existence of the coronet or claws and tongue in red colour.
