The municipality of Pineios (21,034 inhabitants in 2011; 16,290 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the three former municipalities of Gastouni (Γαστούνη, 11,254 inh.), Tragano (Τραγανό, 3,361 inh.), and Vartholomio (Βαρθολομιό, 5,348 inh.).

The municipal unit covers the southern part of the hilly Kyllini (Κυλλήνη) peninsula, and the plains to the southeast. The town of Vartholomio is in the plains, on the right bank of river Pineios (Πηνειός), which flows into the Ionian Sea south of the town.

The flag of the former municipality of Vartholomio (Kokkonis website) was white with its logo, showing the bridge on river Pineios (photo, photo).
