The green/white/red tricolor flag of Iran defaced on the middle white stripe
with a very famous saying by the great Iranian (Persian) poet Ferdowsi (c. 1015
CE). and part of a song there: "Cho Iran nabashad, Tan-e man mabad" meaning: "If
there is no Iran, my life will not be", or "may my body not be if there is no
Iran", or "If Iran is gone, I am gone, too", and implying: "may all souls in
this land [Persia] perish if there is no Iran." Seen in Qatar during the FIFA
World Cup (soccer) in Nov.-Dec. 2022. Per my contact in Tehran: "It makes an
Iranian ready for war & DIE FOR IRAN!" This flag/poem commemorates the people of
Iran, not necessarily its theocracy-style government. Nonetheless, Iranian
dissidents might also parade this flag to show their opposition to Iran's
restrictive government. This 1,000-year-old poem can be read in both Farsi and
English at:
