Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua

image by Ivan Sache, 06 June 2018

UNAN was established in 1958, as Universidad Nacional de Nicaragua, by the Decree prescribing autonomy of the universities. It originates in the university established in León - the last university established by Spain in South America.
UNAN was split into UNAN-Managua and UNAN-León by a Decree adopted on 29 April 1982 by the Government of National Reconstruction.
UNAN-Managua is composed of 9 Faculties and 1 Institute. The university operates three centers in Managua (Rubén Darío [central seat}, Fonseca Amador, Ricardo Morales Avilés) and another four regional centers (Estelí, Matagalpa, Carazo, Chontales).

UNAN-León is composed of 7 Faculties and 1 School. UNAN-León operates, beside its central seat, four regional centers (Madriz, Jinotega, Chinantega, Río San Juan).
UNAN-Managua and UNAN-León both use the same flag and arms, originally prescribed as the symbols of Universidad Nacional de Nicaragua by Decree No. 10, signed on 16 April 1955 by the President of the Republic and published on 28 April 1955 in the official gazette of Nicaragua, No. 92.

Article 1.
The coat of arms of Universidad Nacional de Nicaragua shall be the same as the coat of arms of the former Universidad de León, which was incorporated into it.

The archeologist and researcher Luis Cuadra Cea (1885-1975) explained that the coat of arms of UNAN is composed of two metals, gold and silver, and of four colors, red, blue, green and black.
Gold is a symbol of power, wealth, wisdom, nobleness, and light.
Silver is a symbol of purity, obedience, firmness, vigilance, and eloquence.
Red is a symbol of victory, highness, audacity, and ardor.
Blue is a symbol of justice, truth, charity, beauty, and loyalty.
Green is a symbol of faith, friendship, and respect.
Black is a symbol of sadness and dolor and emphasizes prudence and honesty.

Science is highlighted by a silver sun on a blue field and the 16 golden tongues that surrounds it in a an elegant whirl, which inscribe eight silver stars recalling the first eight professors of the alma mater. The three-towered castle, with the central tower higher, represents the university, protected by the lion rampant in a posture of fight. The shield is surmounted by a knight's helmet, recalling that everyone should behave like knights in knowledge games and professional activities.
