Description

The background stripes are green (for vegetation), yellow (for Markham Valley) and blue (for the sea). A white bird of paradise (representing animal life), white pigšs tusks (traditional exchange), a brown and yellow kundu drum (for festivals) and spears (for traditional warfare) are at the centre. Papua New Guinea issued a series of postage stamps depicting the flags of some of their provinces last year. I have a good picture of the six stamps and the design of some of the flags are slightly different to the ones shown on FOTW. For example, for Morobe Province the flag on the stamp shows the two central drums in blue, the same dark blue as the stripe at the bottom (lighter blue and black drums in the FOTW version). The quality of the pictures on the PNG postal service website is not excellent but good enough (I appreciate their effort, though): http://www.postpng.com.pg/philatelic_files/stamp_issue_files/2004/provincial_flags.htm
