It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.

Shield Vert, an Arabian palace with donjon occupied by a hornblower, dressed Gules and capped black with horn Or, in dexter chief an inescutcheon Azure charged with five plates in quincunx (quina), in sinister chief a waxing crescent Argent. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "MAFAMUDE".

Mafamude Commune was one of the pre-2013 communes of Vila Nova de Gaia Municipality (q.v.); it had 38 544 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 14.7 km².
