Tesla Motors, Inc. was established on July 1, 2003 first as Tesla Motors. Its name is a tribute to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla.

In May 2010 it purchased the NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.) (December 1984 - April 1, 2010). In 2015 it acquired Riviera Tool LLC (established in 2007). In November 2016 it bought SolarCity (July 4, 2006 - (December 28, 2015) November 21, 2016) and Grohmann Engineering (1963 - November 8, 2016). In 2017 it acquired Perbix (1976 - November 6, 2017). In 2019 it acquired Hibar Systems Ltd. (established in 1974), DeepScale, Inc. (established on September 28, 2015), Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (established in 1965). In 2020 it acquired ATW Automation. In 2021 it acquired Springpower International Inc. In 2023 it announced it would be acquiring Wiferion GmbH (established in 2016).
