The initiative for the adoption of a Whittier flag was proposed by resident
Doug Aaron. The inspiration behind this initiative was Whittier's 40th
anniversary of incorporation. Students were included in the design process of
the flag and adults had the opportunity to choose the winning design. With 23
out of 70 votes, Eric Tolman was the winner of this contest. The prize was a
certificate and $250. Although the description of the flag isn't mentioned in
the meeting minutes, it is clear that the flag is filled with Alaskan elements,
including the Alaskan flag, bald eagle, and mountains.

The flag is a horizontal gradient field of

golden outlines, with the first triangle having the big dipper constellation on
it. In the foreground is a Bald Eagle.

The seal shows a ring with the city and incorporation date on it. In the
field is a scene which shows mountains with what resembles the Whittier Creek
flowing down the mountains. The seal depicts the Begich Towers Condominium,
which is known for housing all of the city's residents. Next to it is what
appears to be a boat dock.

The logo shows a mountain with a green tunnel, showing rail tracks and roads
entering it. To the left side of the mountain is the Begich Towers Condominium.
Above the mountain is a steering wheel with a "W" in it. To the right of the
symbol is the city and state name.
