Joseph Crawford designed the City Flag
May 30, 2018
Joseph
Crawford was honored by the City of Union Springs for designing a Union Springs
flag that is flown in front of City Hall. On May 21, 2018 he was presented a key
to the City of Union Springs at the City Council meeting. On May 25, 2018 there
was a ceremony for the flag raising and dedication in front of City Hall. Joseph
was presented a proclamation from the City Council by Mayor Saint T. Thomas, Jr.
that included the designation of May 25 being "Joseph Crawford Day." The Mayor
also presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation.
The ceremony on
May 25 began at 10:00 a.m. with representatives from the Department of Human
Resources, Recreation Department, Street Department, Union Springs City Hall,
Union Springs City Council, Midway Town Council, Judge of Probate, Revenue
Commissioner, Union Springs Herald newspaper, schools, etc. Mayor Saint T.
Thomas, Jr. gave the welcome to this "historical moment" for the raising and
dedication of the city flag. Rev. Louis Pugh prayed the invocation. Mayor Thomas
explained that City Councilman Stan "Chilly" Cooks had attended a meeting where
flags had represented cities and Union Springs did not have a flag. He then
presented the idea to the City Council to have a flag. Councilwoman Deborah
Hicks Milan was given the task of accomplishing this.
Councilwoman Milan
explained there was a competition among the schools to design a flag and Joseph
Crawford's design was selected. That was when he was in the 11th grade at
Conecuh Springs Christian School. He is now a senior at Troy University. Mayor
Thomas explained that the stars on the flag represented the 27 springs for which
Union Springs was named. The color blue represented the water of the springs.
Joseph explained the water represents the "growth and feeding of new life". The
red border represented the border of the city. In the center of the flag is the
city emblem of the dog monument with the phrase "Field Trial Capital of the
World." The colors of red, white and blue of the national flag are used in this
city flag.
